avoiding danger by staying alert
While we do not want to promote panic, anxiety, or paranoia, we also must acknowledge that crime is currently on the rise. In cities across the country, accelerating crime statistics, unsustainable inflation rates creating growing desperation, and the rise of addiction and homelessness have led to increased safety risks in what were once “safe” neighborhoods. Again, this is not a call to panic; instead, we are encouraging everyone to simply improve basic safety precautions. Fortunately, much can be avoided with basic precautions; and, the best precaution is also the easiest. The most important security measure in your arsenal is not your weapon, physical fitness, or intimidating gait; rather, it’s your awareness.
There’s a good reason why “keep your head on a swivel” is a phrase most often repeated in the security world. It all starts with simple awareness. We all know that life is full of distractions. Our minds easily become preoccupied with agendas, advertisements, and social media. And, especially when we are in areas that we think should be safe, we let our guards down. Consider for just a moment how many people you’ve seen recently walking across the street or parking lot on their phone completely unaware even of the cars trying to drive around them. We’ve become a nation of people who do not pay attention! And a simple lack of awareness can create crimes of opportunity. Instead, we need to keep our heads on a swivel.
We aren’t asking you to be afraid and paranoid; however, we are encouraging you to not let your guard down and presume that you are in a safe environment. Please, pay attention to your surroundings by keeping your head up and eyes open. Be aware of people getting oddly close. Try to avoid sitting in a place that limits your visibility or has your back turned to your surroundings. And, if something is making you feel uncomfortable, change your surroundings and prioritize your security.
Staying safe doesn’t have to be complicated.
