Of all the various commentary currently in circulation regarding the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump, we will add that it should also serve as an unfortunate reminder that evil is present and active in our world. Far too often, we are made cognizant through tragedy that there are those who plan and are intent upon inflicting violence. The best of us hope to maintain a positive view of humanity by assuming the best of those around us; lamentably and with heavy hearts, we read through headline after headline and are made aware of the reality that some people want to subject others to harm.
Our prayers go out to the family who tragically lost an honorable and heroic husband and father: Corey Comperatore. And, we pray for a full recovery of those injured.
If we are forced to learn from this situation, compelled to find application beyond the political, perhaps we can be cautioned to make our personal safety and the safety of our family our own responsibility instead of relying on outside services. Corey Comperatore reacted quickly and selflessly; he shielded his family with his body–he didn’t wait for someone else to defend them. We have a naive habit in this country of relying upon security personnel for our personal safety; law enforcement, however, is a reactive force that responds to current threats, active violence, and even the fastest response may be too late. Law enforcement is rarely preventative; it is, therefore, your responsibility to Avoid danger, Evade attacks, and Escape dangerous situations.
Staying alert and practicing situational awareness is a great place to start, but we also recommend that you learn how to defend yourself even if only in the most basic of ways. These two things may not have helped at the Trump rally, but we need to remember that the lunatic gunman at the rally was not the only person in our world with evil desires.
